Lion Hunt
These hunts start in Mid December. A mature mountain lion's home range
can cover up to 100 square miles and more. Within their home range will be
several different areas they hunt deer in and they can cover a lot of ground
when on the move and hunting.
Lions are the most efficient hunters in the woods and average
killing 50-60 deer a year, most of these being whitetails. Occasionally, they
will drag down an elk or bighorn sheep.
Hunts take place in December,January and February. Included in
the cost of the hunt is all lodging, meals, transportation to and from the
Missoula airport, all fuel cost, and guide wages. Success usually runs
100% providing we get good snow conditions.
These hunts are done in 4 wheel drive trucks, snowmobile, and
on foot. We usually head out around 2 AM to drive back roads and look for
tracks at known cat crossings. When a good track is found we wait until
daylight and then turn the hounds loose. If we're lucky the cat has a
fresh kill nearby and with a belly full of meat he won't go far before finding a
tree to climb to escape the dogs.
As we only take a few hunters per year we suggest making your
reservations as soon as possible to ensure that you will be able to hunt with
us. Mountain Lion hunting with dogs is extremely exciting and is one of our
favorite hunting sports. We hope we can share this exciting sport with you this
fall!
